Ah, the holidays are over. The tree is down, the New Year is here… and your kids are already bored with the gifts they got.
If this sounds like your house, don’t be sad. I’ve got three kids, and it takes them a maximum of thirty six hours after the gifts are unwrapped to tell me that they’re bored, and that there’s nothing to do.
Luckily for my kids, (and for me), they’ve got birthdays in January, February and March. But if your kids are going to be waiting a while for their next round of gifts to unwrap, you may feel at a loss.
You already bought the hottest toys of 2017 at Christmas. So what’s new for 2018? If you’re up to treating your kids to some post-holiday surprises, here are the hottest new toys of 2018.
You’re going to need a little bit of floor space to use these guys. But if you’re one of the millions who’s lucky enough to have a living room big enough to be an airport, these remote control air swimmers are a “splash.” (You see what I did there?)
They’re almost 5 feet long and are 3 feet tall. But once these fishies are filled with helium, they’re a giant hoot, sure to keep your kids entertained for hours.
These race tracks were popular for 2017, and they’re still popular this year. These glow in the dark tracks can be taken apart and put back together, bent, flexed and made into any shape track you want.
The glowing race track sets come with one car, but there are expansion packs you can buy. Those packs have more cars so your kids can share. They’ve got more track, too, for endless possibilities.
Interactive Baby Monkeys (Fingerlings)
Think back over the past few decades at the toys that parents have gone crazy for. There were the Furby dolls, Tamagotchis and, more recently, Hatchimals.
Along the same lines as those popular toys are Fingerlings. These are cute little monkeys that rest atop your child’s finger. They’ll respond to sound, motion and touch. Your kid will love hearing the monkey chatter and watching his Fingerling’s eyes blink.
Oh, yes. If you’re old enough to remember the first Teddy Ruxpin, you may have doubts about getting one for your kids. The first Teddy Ruxpin was, to put it nicely, creepy as heck.
This time around, Teddy is cuter than ever, plus he’s equipped for the 21st century. He’s got his own app, and he’s Bluetooth compatible. Even better? He has LED eyes. Your kids will love Teddy, and you’ll feel nostalgic when you play with him, too.
Another toy that you – I mean your kids – will love is Crazy Bricks. Crazy Bricks are like a 3D version of Legos, but with gears and moving parts. Want to convince your kid to grow up to be an engineer? Crazy Bricks is a great place to start.
There are 81 bricks in the set, which is plenty to make a robot, car or other engineering marvel. Got two sets? Your child may very well design the next Tesla.
I won’t lie… this isn’t necessarily one of the hottest toys in 2018. It’s one of the hottest toys of all time. When my kids were smaller, LED tub toys were literally the only way I could convince the boys to take a bath.
Buy one, buy two, buy a whole tub full. If your kid is old enough to bathe without supervision, you’re golden. But even the littles will love bath time if you add one of these tub toys to the water.
For added fun, grab some of those bathtub water color changers. The LED lights in a pool of blue water is like a disco in the bathroom.
There was an older version of this toy, and that version got a lot of complaints. Users said that the back wheels would break and that the battery would die after only about twenty minutes.
Razor listened, and they released a newer version of the Power Rider called the Power Rider 360. I can personally attest to how awesome this toy is because my own kids have it.
Kids up to 120 pounds can ride up to 9 miles per hour. That doesn’t seem fast, but when you factor in the drifts, spins and turns it will do, that 9 mph suddenly seems a lot faster.
I do recommend that you buy a helmet for your kids to use with this tricycle. Until your kids learn how to use it, it’s prone to tipping, especially on bumpy surfaces.
I mentioned that I have three kids. The 10 and 8 year olds love their power trike, but the 3 year old isn’t big enough yet.
To keep her from getting bored, we bought her the Razor Jr. Crazy Cart. Your little Crazy Kid will feel the wind through her hair at speeds up to 2 miles per hour. Plus, she’ll also be able to do turns and drifts, just like her older siblings. Razor Jr. Lil’ Crazy Cart is definitely one of the hottest toys for 2018.
Anything from Insect Lore
Kids love to play outside, but sometimes the winter months just don’t allow for that. Why not bring the outdoors in? Just find a product you like at Insect Lore, and you’re not only entertaining your kids, but teaching them too!
Insect Lore is most well known for its butterflies. Unfortunately, we don’t all live in regions where it’s humane to raise butterflies in the dead of winter. Live in Florida? Go for it!
For those of us not fortunate enough to reside in the Sunshine State, there are other options. You can choose from ladybugs or ants. If your climate permits, you can even hatch praying mantis eggs! Those strange looking insects are great if you have a garden!
